Woman, 20, fighting for her life after Mancunian Way crash was 'attempting to cross' carriageway

A 20-year-old woman who was seriously injured in a collision on the Mancunian Way had been 'attempting to cross the westbound carriageway' at the time, police say.

Emergency services rushed to the road at around 1.25am this morning (Saturday October 8) following the incident between Fairfield Street and the A6. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a pedestrian, 20, suffered 'life-threatening' injuries after being struck by a car.

GMP are now appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage to help with their investigation.

"Our initial enquiries suggest that the woman was walking towards the eastbound carriage way of the A57 (Mancunian Way), crosses the eastbound carriage way safely and waits in the central reservation of the carriage way," a force spokesman said. "Upon attempting to cross the westbound carriageway, she is then struck."

Mancunian Way was partially closed following the collision but re-opened at around 8.30am this morning. Earlier this year, the speed limit on the Mancunian Way was reduced from 50mph to 30mph, following a series of crashes.

Anyone who witnessed this incident, has dash cam footage from that area during that time period or any information that could assist enquiries is asked to contact GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 222 of 08/10/2022. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
