Federal and Connecticut prosecutors say a Stamford physician's in-house lab billed Medicare and Medicaid for individual blood tests it could not have performed because the lab did not have the chemical reagents needed to run them. Dr. Steven Murphy and his two practices, Murphy Medical Associates LLC and Diagnostic and Medical Specialists of Greenwich LLC, agreed to pay $866,539 to resolve the allegations, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut announced on Oct. 16.
As part of the settlement, Murphy and the practices also agreed to be excluded from all federal health care programs for three years. The settlement covers September 2019 through April 2022, a period that began shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and ran through much of it.
