Revere Family Artifacts Auction: Provenance drives $20,000 sale; bidders prize trade sign

Renovators were working on a house in Canton, Massachusetts, when they discovered a collection of artifacts that were associated with Paul Revere's family in an attic wall in 2021. The objects included a black trade sign that bore the name of Revere's son, Joseph W. Revere, along with letters, tools and personal belongings that were connected to the family. The collection was sold as a single lot by an auction house for $20,000 on December 11, 2021, which far exceeded the auctioneer's expectations. John McInnis had expected a sale that fell below $8,000, while the auction website estimated that the collection would fetch between $1,000 and $2,000.
