Steven Gerrard salutes Ange Postecoglou's Celtic glory as ex Rangers boss sidesteps rivalry to praise rebuild

Impressed Steven Gerrard has saluted the success Ange Postecoglou has achieved since becoming Celtic manager.

The former Rangers boss left Ibrox last November but the Australian was able to overcome successor Gio van Bronckhorst in the race for Scottish Premiership glory. The 56-year-old secured the double in his first season in charge and the Aston Villa manager is a major fan of the man who was once briefly his city rival in Glasgow.

Gerrard admits his allegiances remain in Govan but he has been left seriously impressed by the rebuilding job Postecoglou masterminded during his first season at Parkhead. Celtic 's run to title success came only 12 months after Gerrard's side had extinguished green and white dreams by stopping 10 In A Row and romping to the league by 25 points.

During Villa's tour Down Under, he told News Corp Australia: "Ange did fantastically well. He came in with his own style.

"It took a little bit of time for him to implement that but once the players got used to that, they went on to win the league title and the League Cup as well, so it was a very successful season for him. He’s someone who I’ve got a lot of respect for and a lot of admiration for, and he’s done ever so well, so credit to him.

“He’s obviously got big experience. He’s had a lot of success throughout his career, and he comes across as a very humble guy. Obviously I’m Rangers through and through. I want Rangers to do well. I’m sure he appreciates that, but from coach to coach he’s someone that I’ve got a lot of respect for."
