Shetland is the BBC’s award-winning murder mystery drama set on the isolated Shetland islands, far to the north of Scotland.
Sadly, its main star Douglas Henshall has decided to leave his iconic role of DI Perez after first taking it on in 2013.
By the time the final episode of season seven airs later in 2022, he will have starred in the series for nine illustrious years.
Gaynor Holmes, executive producer for BBC Drama, said: "It has been an absolute privilege to work on Shetland over the past few years and watch the show go from strength to strength - in no small part thanks to Douglas's sensitive, intelligent and memorable portrayal of DI Jimmy Perez.
"We will miss him enormously."
Why is Douglas Henshall leaving Shetland?
Douglas’ reason for leaving his beloved role in Shetland is simply because he is looking to branch out as an actor.
As reported by the BBC, “he has decided to quit to explore other acting opportunities.”
The star added: "It's been one of the privileges of my career to play Jimmy Perez for almost 10 years and to work with so many wonderful people both in front of and behind the camera, and also to spend so much time in Shetland.
"The isles were so much a part of our show and of Perez himself. I'll miss him and the place."
Taking to Twitter on June 22, the star remained coy on the reasons for leaving, though promised he’ll “explain [his] reasons for leaving later.”
Douglas explained: “Been a weird day. Thank you for all the kind words about Shetland.
“The people, all around the world who followed Jimmy Perez over the years and empathised with him, thank you, it was very much appreciated.
“For those that are interested I’ll explain my reasons for leaving later.”
The Glaswegian actor hasn’t opened up about his decision to leave since, though he will likely update his followers after the new series airs.
His replacement has not been confirmed yet, though the BBC said the search was on to find the series’ new lead.
Season eight will likely release around the same time next year, though no dates have currently been confirmed.
When is Shetland season seven out?
The BBC has finally confirmed the release date for Shetland season seven, with the show hitting screens on Wednesday, August 10 at 9pm.
It will also be available on BBC iPlayer on the same date.
There will be six episodes in total, following the same format the show has enjoyed since season two.
Episodes will release weekly, meaning the season will come to a close on September 14.
