The cardiac risk nobody mentions at diagnosis
When a gynaecologist confirms PCOS, the conversation almost always centres on irregular periods, weight, or fertility. The heart rarely comes up. A 2023 meta-analysis published in the European Heart Journal, covering data from over 900,000 women, found that those with PCOS face a 30 to 40% higher risk of coronary artery disease and a significantly elevated risk of stroke compared to women without the condition. That number does not appear on most discharge summaries.
