Jonjo Shelvey to Nottingham Forest transfer: Medical scheduled, contract details, Eddie Howe's verdict

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is set to join Nottingham Forest, with a medical scheduled to take place today (Monday).

The Reds continue to be busy in the transfer market as the January window draws to a close. Shelvey could become Forest's fourth signing this window after Gustavo Scarpa, Danilo and Chris Wood.

Clubs have until the end of Tuesday night to do business, at which point the window closes until the end of the season. How many more will Forest get through the door?

One thing is for sure, it promises to be a busy time up until the deadline. NottinghamshireLive takes a closer look at the Shelvey transfer and details of the deal...

Forest 'on the verge'

Forest are "on the verge" of signing Shelvey, according to The Telegraph. Newcastle are apparently willing to let him leave before the window closes.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe was said to be reluctant to lose him initially but with Shelvey reportedly keen to join Forest and first-team chances limited at St James' Park, he did not want a potentially unhappy player on his hands.

The Telegraph says Shelvey has been given permission to speak to the Reds and could travel to the East Midlands for a medical as soon as Monday.

Medical scheduled

Jonjo Shelvey is reportedly set to complete his Nottingham Forest medical today (Monday) ahead of his move from Newcastle.

The Reds have been active in the transfer window this month, bringing in so far three reinforcements, in Gustavo Scarpa, Danilo and Chris Wood. Shelvey looks set to become their fourth addition ahead of Tuesday night's deadline.

It was reported last night (Sunday) that Shelvey was 'keen' on a switch to the City Ground after a seven-year stint at Newcastle.

Eddie Howe delivers Shelvey verdict

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admits he didn't want to lose midfielder Jonjo Shelvey to Nottingham Forest.

The 30-year-old is set to undergo a medical today (Monday) ahead of signing a two-and-a-half year deal with the Reds. Shelvey was looking for a new challenge after entering the final months of his contract at St James' Park after a seven-year stint at St James' Park.

Injuries meant he was restricted to just three appearances for Howe this season, and has missed the Magpies' last five matches. Speaking about Shelvey amid his move, Howe told Chronicle Live: "Jonjo has had injuries this season and certainly I would not want to lose him.

Contract

Shelvey is in the final year of his current contract at Newcastle, though would have been due a 12-month extension "if certain appearance criteria had been met this season". It is said he will sign a two-and-a-half year deal with Forest.

Fee

Because Shelvey is approaching the end of his contract, Forest have been able to sign him "on the cheap" - with the fee described as "small". He cost Newcastle £12million when he was snapped up from Swansea City in 2016.

Now 30-years-old, the player is valued at €7m (£6.14m) by transfermarkt, though it is not yet exactly clear how much the Reds will have to pay.

Wages

According to The Telegraph, Shelvey will be earning "more than £70,000-a-week" at Forest after the club offered him a "small wage increase" on what he was earning at Newcastle.

Fitness

Shelvey has been hampered by a hamstring injury this season. He has made only five appearances in all competitions and just one start, while also missing the last five league games for Howe.

It is reported, though, that he is "close to full fitness" and "should be playing again in the next couple of weeks".

What the fans have said

@addgaming75: He has a range of passing and control no one else in our squad currently has. No he's not glamorous or a young star, but will be a solid squad player, better than what we have.

@K_Philips_Bong: Good Prem player. Just hope it doesn't mean that MGW and Yates injuries are serious. Only doubt I have about Shelvey is his recent injury record.

@paz_parish: Good bit of business if Shelvey goes to Forest I reckon - as long as we replace him.

@AshRossDavis1: O'Brien going, Kouyate out longer than we think, Yates could be more serious than we think/know. That's 3 midfielders short. Mangala not looked the same player. Shelvey is a good signing imo.

@1892_NFC_: if we let Shelvey go it will only be if we can get a replacement and with Jonjo’s injury record it may turn out to be a good move, I like Shelvey and will be sad to see him go but has barely been fit lately.

@theslack22: No problem with Shelvey coming in for me. Experienced Prem midfielder, with a good passing range.

@NUFCRantBible: Honestly don’t mind Shelvey going but only if there’s a replacement and the replacement has to have that same level of passing ability; having a good presser with good work rate isn’t enough.

@leazesender_: Good move all round if we get a replacement in. Shelvey has been a great player for us over the years but it’s time for something different and an upgrade. Another who goes with our thanks and blessings.
