Fred makes Cristiano Ronaldo joke when picking Manchester United player of the season

Manchester United midfielder Fred has joked that he deserves the coveted Sir Matt Busby award this season and not Cristiano Ronaldo or David de Gea. Having previously won the prize three and four times respectively, Ronaldo and De Gea are frontrunners to be named player of the year once again.

Dislodged by Dean Henderson last season, De Gea has been a particular stand-out between the posts. He made a 481st appearance for United during the Ronaldo-inspired victory over Norwich on Saturday afternoon to move into 12th spot on the all-time list. He is an ever-present in the Premier League campaign.

De Gea is already top of the pile when it comes to Sir Matt Busby accolades. Few would bet against him making it five at the end of this campaign, either.

That man Ronaldo might have something to say about that after he dragged United back into the top-four mix on Saturday afternoon when he scored a devastating hat-trick against the Canaries. Those goals took his growing tally to 21 in all competitions this season.

Currently sidelined with a hip problem, Fred has enjoyed a notable upturn in form himself since Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim manager. But who does the Brazilian think should win?

During an interview with MUFC media, he said: "Me! Haha. It's difficult. We have great players who have had a good season.

"I think I could vote for Cristiano or Bruno [Fernandes], but for me the best player this season has been David de Gea. He's had a sensational season and he's been there whenever we've needed him."
