Former British and Commonwealth boxing champion Willie Limond passed away at the age of 45, as confirmed by his son Jake on Monday. Limond had an illustrious career, holding titles such as the lightweight Commonwealth title between 2006-07, the super-lightweight title from 2013-14, and the British super-lightweight belt in 2014.
Despite being in his forties, Limond was still actively boxing and was scheduled to face Joe Laws on May 3. His last fight took place in September 2023, where he suffered a defeat by eighth-round stoppage to fellow Scot Ricky Burns.
St Andrew's Sporting Club, Limond's Glasgow-based gym, also expressed their shock and sadness at his passing, describing him as a legend of the sport and a beloved figure. The British Boxing Board of Control extended their condolences to Limond's family and friends during this difficult time.
Limond began his professional boxing career in 1999 and amassed an impressive record of 42 wins out of 48 fights. He faced notable opponents such as Amir Khan, Erik Morales, and Anthony Crolla throughout his career.
One of Limond's memorable fights was against Amir Khan in 2007, where he managed to drop the future world champion in the sixth round before ultimately being forced to retire in the eighth round. He also faced Erik Morales in Mexico City in 2010, where he was stopped in the sixth round by the Mexican boxing great.
Willie Limond leaves behind a lasting legacy in the boxing world and will be remembered for his contributions to the sport. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire boxing community as they mourn his loss.
