Acting the fool: why have Hollywood press tours become so gimmicky?

The hard sell of the summer movie season often comes with a form of bonus feature for particularly enthusiastic film nerds: a flood of interviews, often with some of the biggest and best names in the business. When marquee directors like Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan have directed casts featuring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Josh O’Connor, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Colman Domingo, among many others, there are countless chances for various one-on-ones and combinations that can draw insight from a staggering amount of collective filmmaking experience and talent.

It also means that there are a truly staggering number of clips where various actors and directors play nice with the bite-sized demands of internet-centric promotion as part of their all-hands-on-deck blitz. Sometimes that means a lengthier morning-show interview with Christopher Nolan getting cut down into 60-second bites about Uggs. Sometimes it involves more direct participation, as with a 90-second video where Steven Spielberg, one of the best directors to ever do it, gamely responds to bits and bobs of… questions? Observations? Rumors? It’s hard to characterize them, but they all come from “FilmTok,” the informal group of mostly young, always enthusiastic, sometimes entry-level movie lovers. (The video itself was released by TikTok’s own account.) It’s hard not to feel that Spielberg restating a bunch of stuff he’s said before as 15-second hits for the benefit of FilmTok might be a smidge beneath him.
