Energy firm launches £5million hardship fund for struggling households - how to access it

Shell Energy has pledged a £5million hardship fund to help struggling households. It comes as energy bills have soared in the wake of the price cap rising to 54% from April 1.

The multi-million pound funding will be used to help reduce debt for customers who are struggling to pay their bills. The Mirror reports that you should contact Shell Energy's customer services in the first instance to discuss your circumstances.

You will need to explain why you are struggling to pay your bills with an advisor from Shell Energy who will discuss your situation with you and chat through ways to reduce your bills. To find out more, contact Shell Energy on 0800 011 5166 or paymentadvice@shellenergy.co.uk.

The scheme is likely to be in high demand after the price cap for direct debit customers on a default tariff went up by £693 from £1,277 to £1,971. Prepayment customers have been hit harder, with a jump of £708 from £1,309 to £2,017. The price cap sets a limit on the rates a supplier can charge for each unit of gas and electric and is currently renewed twice year.

Are other energy firms offering help?

British Gas has an 'energy trust fund' that can be accessed by anyone, not just British Gas customers, providing you meet the eligibility criteria. If you are an existing customer, help is also available from:

Who is eligible for help?

Shell says each grant will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. And the exact eligibility requirements vary between energy providers. In some cases, you must be claiming certain benefits to apply.

Generally speaking, you will need to have spoken to a debt adviser first before applying along with showing proof of your income and explaining why you are behind on your bills.

You can also use the free grants search tool from debt charity Turn2Us. This will show help available where you live.
