China’s decision to impose export controls on tunnel boring machines (TBMs) has renewed attention on a vulnerability at the heart of India’s infrastructure expansion -- its dependence on overseas suppliers for equipment that domestic manufacturers cannot yet fully provide. The restrictions, announced on October 19 and effective November 18, come as the Centre moves closer to approving a $1.2 billion incentive scheme for construction and infrastructure equipment manufacturing, ET has reported today. The proposed package aims to attract $1.8 billion in fresh investment over seven years and build domestic capacity in high-value machinery.
India’s infrastructure spending is rising, but the industrial ecosystem needed to support it remains incomplete. The challenge now is to turn that demand into manufacturing capability rather than simply replace one source of imports with another.
