Discord has quickly become the go-to messaging app for gamers looking to socialise and play with others. The popular platform is taking things one step further with its latest console integration.
Starting today, PlayStation 5 owners will be able to speak to their mates using voice chat. Best of all, you can talk with others no matter the device they’re using, including if they’re playing on a PC, another console such as Xbox, mobile, desktop and the web.
Whether you’re new to Discord or a regular user, getting voice chat set up is relatively straightforward. Here’s what you need to do.
How to set up Discord voice chat on PS5
Before you call up your mates, you need to make sure you have the latest PS5 system software update installed.
Once your console is up to date, you just have to link your Discord account to your PS5 if you haven’t already done so.
- First, make sure you’re logged in to your PS5 with your chosen account.
- Go to settings, select users and accounts, select linked services, and choose Discord from the list.
- Next, select Link Account, and accept the terms and conditions.
- Now, you’ll be asked to go to discord.com/activate. Or you can use your phone to scan the onscreen QR code.
- On this web page, you will have to enter the eight-digit code shown on your PS5’s display.
- This will prompt Discord to find your PSN account, and ask you to confirm access. Just hit authorise to accept the terms and conditions, and you should be good to go.
How to use Discord voice chat on PS5
Once you’ve followed the above steps, or if you’ve already linked your account, you’ll need to transfer Discord voice chats to PS5.
Here’s how to do it:
- On either the Discord mobile or desktop app, join or start a voice call.
- On mobile, slide up the voice controls and you’ll see a new button that says “Join on PlayStation”. On desktop, the button looks like a phone and a game controller next to each other.
- Next, you’ll be asked to choose which console that you want to transfer your Voice conversation to: Choose “Transfer to PlayStation.”
- A pop-up will appear allowing you to choose PS5.
- Now press “transfer voice”.
You should now be able to start voice chatting with others via Discord on your PS5. In terms of controls, you can hit the PS button to bring up the control centre, and the Discord chat will be displayed as an activity card. To end the chat, you can leave it from the activity card on your PS5, or you can close the chat on your computer or phone.
