Coldplay cancel shows as Chris Martin hit with 'serious lung condition'

Coldplay have been forced to cancel a number of its upcoming shows after frontman Chris Martin contracted a "serious lung condition".

The band released a statement on their social media accounts to update fans. The group expressed "deep regret" as they were forced to cancel eight shows.

The concerts affected are in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and will be postponed until early 2023. It comes after the singer had been diagnosed with a lung infection and placed "under strict doctor's orders to rest for the next three weeks."

The statement, in full, read: "Hello everyone. It is with deep regret, we've been forced to postpone our upcoming shows in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo until early 2023.

"Due to a serious lung condition, Chris has been put under strict doctor's orders to rest for the next three weeks. We're working as fast as possible to lock in the new dates and will follow up with more information in the next few days.

"To everyone in Brazil who was looking forward to these concerts, we're extremely sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience, and we're so grateful for your understanding at this challenging time where we need to prioritise Chris' health."

It continued as it advised: "Please hold onto your tickets as they will be valid for the new rescheduled dates. These will happen in early 2023 and will be announced very soon. However, we will also honour all requests for ticket refunds - which will be available at the point of sale."

It gave a further update on Chris' condition as it said: "We're optimistic that Chris will return to good health after the prescribed medical break and look forward to resuming the tour soon. To everyone affected, please accept our sincerest apologies, and thank you as always for the love and support."

The band has been touring the world as part of its huge Music of the Spheres tour, which kicked off back in March and was set to end in July next year. They will be playing a bit closer to home - at Manchester's Etihad Stadium - on May 31 and June 1, 2023.
