13-year-old driver accused of stealing a car and causing fatal crash in California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A traffic collision — which investigators say was triggered by a 13-year-old driver — left one person dead and about a dozen more injured, according to the Woodland Police Department.

Officers said they spotted a vehicle driving erratically on Friday afternoon and attempted to pull over the driver near Court and College streets. During the pursuit, police said, the car hit two others in the intersection, causing both to catch fire.

Woodland Fire Department crews and four ambulances arrived at the scene. One person died from their injuries and nearly a dozen others were assessed and treated. The extent of the other injuries was not available.

Investigators said they discovered that the driver who caused the collision is a 13-year-old boy who had stolen the car. He was arrested Saturday afternoon and taken into custody on suspicion of two felonies: vehicular manslaughter with negligence and evading an officer causing injury.

After receiving medical treatment, he was to be booked at Yolo County Juvenile Hall.
