The Yamuna river has been in spate for the last one week, swelling to 207.71 metres on Wednesday, breaching its all-time record of 207.49 metres set in 1978, and inundating several key areas in Delhi.

Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Atishi on Friday said that the water level of Yamuna river is receding gradually at a rate of 0.1 metre and will take a day’s time for the situation to return to normal.

The water level in Yamuna river is rising continuously as Haryana released more water into the river from the Hathnikund barrage amid rains across northwest India including Delhi.

In late March, Hindu worshippers in New Delhi, India bathed in the sacred Yamuna River for the festival of Chhath Puja. But the river was covered in toxic foam. While the Yamuna is among the most sacred rivers in India, it's also one of the most polluted in the world.

A smoky haze hangs over India's northern plains and its capital, New Delhi, every year as winter sets in, raising fears for the health of many millions of people as authorities order fixes that do little to clear the air.

As heavy rains ravage many states in North India, a flood alert was issued earlier this week in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The Delhi government issued an advisory stating, “People in low-lying areas to vacate their place as the water level neared warning level in the Yamuna river.”
