Fearing for their safety in strife-torn Manipur, students at Imphal’s Indian Institute of Information Technology-Manipur have written to the institute’s director asking permission to return to their home states.

The Imphal valley in strife-torn Manipur has been rocked this week by protests by students, clashes with security personnel, stone-pelting at the Raj Bhavan, and tearing down of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s posters. And a curfew and suspension of internet services are in place in several districts.

Tensions escalated in Manipur’s Imphal on Tuesday as clashes broke out between students and security forces during a protest, despite a curfew being in place in several districts.

The Manipur government has imposed a five-day “temporary suspension or curbing of internet and mobile data services” across the state, along with curfews in Imphal East and West districts and prohibitory orders in Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching, as per The Hindu.

The move follows student protests calling for peace that erupted in response to a new wave of ethnic violence.
