General Motors Co. will deliver its largest profit-sharing payouts ever to employees next month ― up to $12,750 this year to about 42,300 eligible hourly workers, according to the company's financial results released Tuesday.

Jeep maker Stellantis NV said on Friday that it would stop operations at a 1,350-employee assembly plant in Illinois, citing the need to control costs in the face of supply-chain disruptions and high expenses associated with moving to electric vehicles.

The decision, which the UAW calls "grossly misguided," will be effective at the end of February 2023.

The University of California and the union representing tens of thousands of its striking academic workers agreed Friday to ask an independent mediator to intervene in stalled contract negotiations, hoping to reach an agreement to end the monthlong walkout that has forced much tumult across the 10-campus system.

The maker of Jeep will idle its plant in Belvidere, Illinois, at the end of February in a "necessary action," citing the increasing costs from electric vehicles and other industry disruptions in its decision.

The Feb. 28 closing of the plant near Rockford means 1,350 workers will be laid off.
