New laws come into effect in Australia today that change the look, ingredients, and packaging of tobacco products.

Sky-high tobacco prices in Australia have created a lucrative black market, analysts say, sparking a violent "tobacco war" and syphoning away billions in potential tax revenue.

Tuesday night’s federal budget revealed a sharp drop in what was once a major source of revenue for the government – the tobacco excise.

MPs voted 366 to 41, majority 325, to approve the Tobacco and Vapes Bill at third reading.

Labour MP Jenny Riddell-Carpenter backed the Tobacco and Vapes Bill and gave up smoking herself.

The MP for Clacton said: ‘There are some of us that like a smoke. We do. We even go for a few pints at a pub.’

Smoking outside schools, children’s playgrounds and hospitals will be prohibited under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
