Rivers around the world have been drying up recently. The Loire in France broke records in mid-August for its low water levels, while photos circulating online show the mighty Danube, Rhine, Yangtze and Colorado rivers all but reduced to trickles.

Water levels on the Franco-German section of the Rhine river are so low that some vessels cannot sail even when empty, although long-awaited rain has begun to ease bottlenecks along Europe's main commercial waterway.

Traffic along the river Rhine, impeded by low water levels, was hindered further on Wednesday after a vessel's engine failure closed part of the waterway, said the river police.
