An independent analysis of recent data from K2-18b casts doubt on claims of detecting alien life on the distant exoplanet.

A team of astronomers announced on April 16, 2025, that in the process of studying a planet around another star, they had found evidence for an unexpected atmospheric gas. On Earth, that gas – called dimethyl sulfide – is mostly produced by living organisms.

Scientists have found further evidence of possible biosignature gases on the planet K2-18b, strengthening its case as an abode for alien life. But the case is far from closed.

The research, led by scientists at the University of Cambridge, detected evidence of compounds in the exoplanet's atmosphere that on Earth are only produced by living organisms.
