What’s new: The head of the justice department in the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, Ainiwaer Siyiti, has turned himself in to authorities investigating him for corruption.
Siyiti, also the deputy secretary of the department’s party committee, is suspected of “serious violations of discipline and law,” a common euphemism for corruption, according to a statement published by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, quoting the anti-graft branch in Xinjiang.
The statement posted late Saturday did not elaborate on Siyiti’s alleged wrongdoing.
The background: Siyiti previously worked in multiple government positions including mayor of the city of Asku, chief of Awat county, and deputy party secretary of Xinhe county. He also served as a senior official in the autonomous region’s drug rehabilitation bureau.
He was born in December 1964 and is a native of Xinhe county in southwestern Xinjiang. He joined the Communist Party of China at the age of 19.
