World leaders are gathering on the beaches of Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This historic event, which took place on June 6, 1944, marked a significant turning point in World War II. The Allies successfully established a beachhead in France, paving the way for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
More than 20 heads of state and government, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are expected to participate in the various events planned across Normandy. These events are designed to honor the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who participated in the largest seaborne invasion in history.
Tragically, around 10,000 Allied troops lost their lives, were injured, or went missing in action during the D-Day operation. Their sacrifice and bravery played a crucial role in securing victory in Europe less than a year later.
