A newlywed couple were charged half of their spending money for a dream trip to New York after they had to pay almost £700 to change the surname on their booking.
According to Sharon Barrett she was contacted by Hays Travel less than two weeks before she and husband Paul were going to head off to the States on December 9. On that call she was informed had to pay £698.50 to change the surname on the holiday, or lose 99% of the £2,200 they had paid if they cancelled the trip.
The 58-year-old told the Chronicle: "They've charged us this absolutely ridiculous price without an explanation of what the fee was for. I thought I was hearing things when they told me the price on the phone. I paid it just so I could go on holiday and I didn't lose the money I had already paid but obviously I'm skint now. They had me by the neck really, I either had to pay it or lose 99% of the £2,200."
