Most people have heard of sleepwalking, and some know that people can raid the refrigerator without fully waking up. Far fewer know that a person can light up and smoke during a sleep disorder episode. A case report in the journal Sleep Science described a 45-year-old married woman who did all three, and a single bedtime medication brought every one of those behaviors under control.
The report, published in the journal Sleep Science in 2022 by Sana Elham Kazi, Jamal Mujaddid M. Mohammed, and Carlos H. Schenck, is not new. But it remains a striking example of how unusual nighttime behaviors can stack up in one person, and how a patient who complains about one strange sleep problem may be living with several. The authors wrote that, to their knowledge, it was "the first reported successful treatment of sleep-related smoking."
