West Ham were unable to continue their recent uptick in results and take a huge stride towards Premier League safety at the London Stadium as they fell to defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. The Anfield club have endured a mixed season in the league, but this result will fuel their slim hopes of a top-four finish as Cody Gakpo and Joel Matip scored to earn them a hard-fought victory.
The Hammers have been much improved of late, going unbeaten in the five games before this one, and they took the lead through Lucas Paqueta after 12 minutes, the Brazilian scoring after a fine team move.
But they were pegged back instantly by Gakpo who drilled into the bottom corner from 25 yard, before Matip powered home a header in the second half to clinch the win for Liverpool.
