Vibrant pop-up shop opens in Nutgrove Shopping Centre

A pop up shop offering a range of vibrant homewares has opened in Nutgrove.

Sahara was founded by Barikisu Ali Telfer and initially offered customers a wide range of electic hand-woven baskets. Barikisu, also known as Kisu, said people in Ireland were struck by the colourful baskets she had brought over from Ghana while out shopping.

She decided to get in touch with weavers back in Ghana to create a business plan. Kisu later brought Sahara to the Irish market with a pop up shop in Dun Laoghaire, which enjoyed tremendous success.

Kisu told Dublin Live: "It’s a new business and although the first few years are never easy, we've gotten great feedback. The baskets add a pop of colour as home decor and they get great interest."

The business owner has now expanded beyond baskets to include textiles and homeware. Sahara also sells jewellery, clothes and lampshades designed by Kisu herself.

The shop is open on a trial basis in Nutgrove Shopping Centre until the end of the month. Kisu is hopeful the summer season will help drum up trade for the new business.

She said: "I think the time of year you open counts a lot. Costs have gone up but we're hanging in there and people are loving the products so far."

Quirky items, such as dog and cat beds, are also up for sale in the pop-up. Further information about the shop is available through Sahara's website.
