The Idol looked completely different in leaked snaps before Sam Levinson took over

After months of controversy, the graphic Sam Levinson-directed drama The Idol finally wrapped up with its fifth episode.

In the series, Lily-Rose Depp, who is the daughter of Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and model Vanessa Paradis, played the role of Jocelyn, an aspiring pop star who began a complicated and toxic relationship with a self-help guru, Tedros, taken on by The Weeknd.

The HBO series received extensive criticism from fans for being "cringey" and "off-putting". Similarly, USA Today said the show was "sexist, gratuitous, exploitative ... and achingly boring".

But newly-released pictures show that the final product of the show could have been completely different had the show's original director Amy Seimetz still been at its helm.

Before Sam took over the reins, Amy had pretty much directed the entire series, and the snaps from her time as director have now been shared on social media, showing that the final product would have been much more girly and wholesome.

One Twitter account @thisisnotahmad shared three images from the set, writing: "Amy seimetz's version of the idol was going to include scenes that referenced jocelyn's past as a child star. One of the biggest flaws in sam levinson's version was that jocelyn being a pop star never felt real or authentic so it would've been nice to see that fleshed out."

In the images, Lily-Rose is seen surrounded by a large group of women during what appears to be a sleepover in her bedroom while surrounded by life-sized cut-outs.

Many of the women in the images were most likely cut, as they never appeared in the final version of The Idol.

Another Twitter account that the parents of a child actor ran showed their daughter on the set of The Idol, claiming that she booked and filmed for a role on the show that was never shown.

The snaps had people calling for Amy's cut of the show to be released, with one person tweeting: "why cant they just release the original one and change the title for like "the star" idk i need it."

A second said: "RELEASE THE SEIMETZ CUT", while a third echoed: "Can Amy please release The Idol?"

Some else also chimed in: "This makes me so sad we were robbed of an actual story instead of whatever we got."

During its five-episode run, The Idol was called out for "unnecessary" scenes that were "cringey" and incredibly graphic.

However, Lily-Rose recently hit back at critics over her role as the sex-positive popstar in the show.

Despite concern from fans over the uncomfortable sex scenes, Lily told The Sun that she found filming "therapeutic" and didn't even consider hiring a body double.

"It's all me. I love doing that kind of work," she said. "I don't think there's anything wrong with that. And I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying that kind of work.

"Every outfit and every interaction and every piece of nudity and all those things are very intentional and were really important to me."
