Sovereign shopping centre in Weston begins transformation

Work is underway at Weston's Sovereign Shopping Centre with a set of ambitious plans in full force.

The work is being undertaken as part of the town's placemaking investment programme, which will see the centre's name evolve into the Sovereign.

Plans include creating new workspace for business, makers, entrepreneurs and individuals while offering flexible working options to meet the increasing demand for different types of working.

A stylish new restaurant/cafe space is being introduced, as something which is hoped to appeal to any businesses who are looking to open a new eatery.

There also looks to be a dedicated space to support active lifestyles and wellbeing, including a cycle hub and rental shop.

And that's all in addition to the enhancements and refurbishments being undertaken on certain parts of the interior and exterior of the building , to improve access and, in general, stylise the 'outward profile' of the centre.

The work is being carried out by a local contractor, which North Somerset Council says will ensure that money invested into the project is put back into the local economy.

Cllr Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Placemaking and Economy at the council, said: “Local residents have spoken and they’re clearly supporting the continuation of Sovereign.

“The revamp work taking place at the Sovereign will offer the community a place to meet, work and shop. The high street is rapidly changing, and we need to offer a multi-use space that meets the developing landscape. The Sovereign is a cherished local asset and the lynchpin of the revitalisation of the wider town centre. With this work, we will bring further energy and excitement to the heart of our town.”

Work is expected to finish on the Sovereign in the summer, just in time for the opening of SEE MONSTER, located at the Tropicana in Weston.
