Snow drought ends with a roar for southern New England

Historic snow drought in the Northeast may finally end this weekend.

The Northeast is on the edge of their seats as a winter storm looms over the region, promising much-needed snow for the snow-starved states. This storm, brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, is anticipated to bring a mix of wintry weather and heavy rainfall to various parts of the eastern seaboard. However, the impact of this storm will largely depend on where you reside, leaving some to wonder if they will witness a roar or just a mere whimper.

The storm, currently gathering moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to make landfall over the weekend, unleashing its wintry fury. Weather experts speculate that southern interior New England will experience the brunt of the storm's snowfall, possibly accumulating anywhere between 6 to 12 inches. Surprisingly, Boston stands as the lone major east coast city included in the winter storm watch. Residents of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the D.C. area can breathe a sigh of relief, as they remain excluded from this particular winter weather event.

For those residing in Washington D.C., the wintry mix of rain and snow is predicted to commence by mid-morning on Saturday. The precipitation will then extend to Philadelphia and New York City, mainly as rain along the coastline east of I-95. Although New York City might experience a sprinkling of wet snow, it is unlikely to make a significant impact, with only up to an inch possible. The storm is expected to transition into mostly rain overnight, with just a few flurries lingering behind. On the other hand, Boston and its surrounding areas can anticipate a proper snowfall event, while locations further inland, like Worcester, will also receive their fair share of snow.

The Weather Prediction Center has issued a marginal risk of excessive rain, extending all the way from Providence to New York and Philadelphia. This implies that the coastal regions could potentially experience heavy rainfall. The sharp cutoff point along the I-95 corridor distinguishes the likelihood of snow versus rain. New York City dwellers may momentarily rejoice at the possibility of ending their snow drought, but the reality is that this storm is shaping up to be predominantly a rain event for them and their neighboring locations.

While hopes may be raised, it's important to remember that this storm's impact is still uncertain. The accuracy of weather predictions can waver as the storm approaches, leaving room for surprises. Ultimately, it remains a waiting game for the hopeful snow enthusiasts, as they eagerly anticipate the arrival of this winter storm and the potential snowfall it may bring to southern New England.
