Ryan Mason refuses to downplay Conference League as Tottenham learn from Jose Mourinho

Ryan Mason has denied qualifying for the Europa Conference League would be a bad thing for Tottenham.

A seventh-placed finish for Spurs would see them enter Europe’s third tier club competition for a second time in three seasons even despite looking on course for Champions League qualification for much of the campaign.

With the Conference League being a relatively new concept, there has been some debate in regards to how positive that truly would be for a club of their stature.

Still, Harry Kane has urged Spurs to take whatever competition they end up in seriously in an effort to end the long wait for a trophy.

Mason, who hopes to convince Daniel Levy he is an option to take the manager’s job on a full-time basis, echoes that view and believes former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho helped legitimise the competition by winning it with Roma last season.

“We’re in a moment where we need to finish as high as possible and get as many results as we can,” he said.

“It would be very wrong for any club to speak badly about any competition. Jose Mourinho has done an incredible job in giving that competition a real status.”
