An amateur rugby league player suffered a bizarre injury as the corner flag was impaled in his leg after he scored.
Charlie Mills plays for amateur club Saddleworth Rangers and scored in the corner during their game on Sunday against Ince Rose Bridge in the National Conference League Division One. The winger dived over the line out wide early in the second half to score and bring Rangers back into the game as they trailed 20-6 at half time.
As he scored the important try, Mills knocked the corner flag over before the flag bounced up and got stuck in his leg. Paramedics and the Fire Brigade were called immediately.
Consider this a warning for any faint-hearted readers - although Mills appeared to take it like a champion as he posed for photos with a smile on his face. He was likely filled with anaesthetic to get him through the experience.
Medical personnel were on hand to stop any attempts to pull the flag from Mills’ leg before the player was swiftly taken to hospital. He underwent successful surgery yesterday.
Mills was pictured holding the flag in his hand, simultaneously in shock and awe at his impaler. The photo shows how deeply the flag was stuck in his leg.

Leeds Rhinos legend Barrie McDermott was stunned by the incident, tweeting: “Toughest man in RL this week goes to Charlie Mills from @SaddRangers that’s some story to tell your mates in the club house! We salute you my man.”
Saddleworth secretary Peter Townsend told League Express: “The Fire Brigade cut away most of the post so Charlie could be put in the ambulance. He was taken to a special unit at Wigan to remove the embedded piece after a CT scan, to ensure that no arteries were damaged.”
Charlie McManus converted the try when play resumed after Mills was taken to hospital, but Ince Rose Bridge went on to win the game 32-12.
