Punjab: Congress split over backing Amarjit Singh alias Jeeti Sidhu as Mohali mayor

MOHALI: Congress councillors stand divided over supporting mayor Amarjit Singh alias Jeeti Sidhu who switched from the party to the BJP recently.

Some of them have outrightly denied of joining BJP or supporting Sidhu, while a few have assured they will not join the BJP but will give outside support to him.

On the other hand, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring held a meeting with some of the party councillors and discussed the further course of action. As many as 11 councillors pledged their support for a Congress mayor, with former senior deputy mayor Rishav Jain emerging as frontrunner. "We stand united and will topple BJP mayor's seat and elect a Congress mayor. I am the senior-most Congressman and district president, but the final decision for the post will be of the party head," said Jain.

The Congress is likely to ask Sidhu to prove his majority in the house, moving a no trust motion. Sidhu is claiming to have support of 16 Congress councillors. Deputy mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, one of Sidhu's loyalists, said, "We have decided not to join the BJP but for the development of Mohali and its residents, we will support Sidhu in the house."
