Protest demanding general election set for Guy Fawkes night

Following Prime Minister Liz Truss’s resignation on October 17, the Conservative Party has started the search for its next leader.

However, as trust in the Conservative Party has significantly decreased after two PM resignations in one term, many members of the public believe the country needs a general election instead of a new Conservative leader.

Without an election, the Conservative Party is free to choose the next prime minister as they see appropriate, without the public having a say, which is what has inspired the protests.

Politics4You has announced it has organised a formal protest to demand a general election.

Revealing the decision on Twitter, the group said: “We hereby formally announce a formal protest on the 5TH OF NOVEMBER to DEMAND A GENERAL ELECTION. The Met Police have been notified.

“Will YOU stand up for democracy? Please share. It is TIME for our voice to be HEARD. #GeneralElectionNow #ToriesOutNow”

The protest is set to see members of the public meet outside Whitehall on November 5, which coincides with Guy Fawkes Night, the annual celebration that marks the day Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

Meanwhile, the acting editor of The Independent, David Marley has started a General Election petition that has seen over 315,000 people sign it so far.

His explanation for the petition outlines: “Announcing her resignation, Ms Truss said a new prime minister would be chosen within a week. We at The Independent believe this is unacceptable. This will be the third Conservative prime minister since the last general election in 2019.

“Who is leading our country should be decided in a general election, not in the strange bubble of yet another Conservative leadership election. It is time for voters to decide who should govern the country and uphold the democratic principles our governing bodies are built on. For this reason, we are calling for a general election now.

“It is a simple and fundamental principle that the government derives its democratic legitimacy from the people. Let them have their say.”
