Perthshire golfers selected to represent Scotland at European team championships

Perthshire golf ace Daniel Bullen has been selected to represent Scotland at the European Boys Team Championship.

The Auchterarder member (17) will travel to GC St Leon-Rot in Germany with the national squad for the showpiece on July 5 to 9.

He is part of a six-strong team including Ross Laird, Callum Kenneally, Oliver Mukherjee and Niall Shiels Donegan and Archie Finnie.

“It’s a special one,” Daniel said of his selection. “It is going to be a great trip away.

“I haven’t been able to play too many competitions this year because of exams. But getting in the team is good for the confidence and shows my game is there or thereabout.

“Obviously it will be the best under-18 men in Europe from a number of different countries. The competition is going to be great but the experience - playing golf in a different country and meeting new people - will be awesome.

“I’ve never played the course but noticed it hosted the 2015 Solheim Cup. It has a good pedigree.”

Daniel, who was involved in regional qualifying for The Open this week, continued: “We have a really solid team for the Europeans and we’ll try do the best we can. That is all you can do.

“I’ve now got a week and a half of good practice before I head away. I’ll be playing as much as I can.”

Two other Perthshire golfers will be pulling on the Scotland colours on the same dates.

Fellow Auchterarder member Rory Franssen and rising star Connor Graham, of Blairgowrie, will contest the European Amateur Team Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club in England.

“I’ve spoken to Rory a bit and we cross paths,” Daniel said. "It’s an awesome achievement for the club to have two players in the national teams.

“It shows what the club can do and hopefully it helps to inspire the next generation coming through.”

Later this summer Daniel will continue his journey in the game by jetting stateside on a golf scholarship.

He is set to attend the University of Oregon and said: “I’ll be going over late August, early September.

“They have a really good team and the facilities will be brilliant. There is not much more you can ask for.

“I’ve always had it in my head that I would go over to America. It’s the best place right now and a top amateur level. If you can compete and improve there, it will be easier to take the next step.”
