When people first heard that the all-electric Jeep Recon Moab would offer under 230 miles of range, I remember the barbs. Journalists at the L.A. Auto Show last year were far from impressed. Then, last week, when I set out to drive the Recon, many commenters and critics agreed: Jeep should have made the EV go farther on a charge and cost less.
I certainly think that the Recon Moab's 222-mile range and $66,995 starting price hardly make it a a compelling mass-market vehicle. But that's not what it's supposed to be, and arguing that Jeep could have offered more range for less money without sacrificing capability is a fantasy.
