Owner of Milngavie bakery 'devastated' after mindless thieves smash window and steal till

The owner of an independent bakery has been left devastated after the shop was broken into and robbed.

The Honeybee Bakery on Station Road in Milngavie was targeted by mindless thugs on Sunday evening.

Owner Vittoria Capaldi was contacted by a concerned member of the public around 8.30pm after they heard two loud bangs coming from the shop.

The 28-year-old owner arrived to find the window had been smashed and the till and takings had been stolen. The bakery has been forced to close while staff cleans up the mess left behind.

Vittoria told Glasgow Live: "It happened around 8.30pm when there will still people around. A woman out walking her dog heard the noises and contacted me and the police.

"The street is normally very quiet, we've never had anything like this happen before so it's been a big shock. I think they tried to break into another shop on the street but weren't able to get in.

"We've lost a day's business due to the clear up and we'll have to replace the till and the window so it's a lot of money for a small business. As if January isn't hard enough, especially during the cost of living crisis."

The thieves were caught on CCTV breaking into the shop with the discarded till later found dumped near the train station. The suspects were picked up on CCTV getting into a car near the station.

The Honeybee Bakery has been a popular fixture in the town for eight years and employs a team of around 10 including in-house bakers.

Vittoria added: "We've been lucky that we've got CCTV installed and they weren't criminal masterminds so there were lots of fingerprints left behind.

"We've never had anything like this happen to us before. There are flats and other businesses around so it's worrying to think that there are people capable of doing something like this around.

"Our customers have so far been so supportive and have sent us lots of lovely messages since we posted about the break-in.

"I just hope we're able to open back up tomorrow - most likely with a boarded-up window!"

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We were made aware of a break-in at premises on Station Road in Milngavie around 8.30pm on Sunday, 15 January.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
