A medication for post-menopausal symptoms is now available over the counter for the first time in the UK.
Boots is the first pharmacy to offer Gina, a formerly prescription only hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medication, which is now available online and at 590 shops. The retailer plans to roll out the product to all Boots UK locations by October 24.
The tablets can be accessed after a consultation with a pharmacist in-person or online if purchasing through the Boots website. The HRT medication is suitable for people aged 50 and over who haven't had a period in at least a year.
Gina treats and relieves vaginal atrophy - the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal wall that occurs due to reduced oestrogen levels after menopause. Its symptoms cause vaginal dryness, itching, burning, soreness and uncomfortable sex.
The high street retailer is selling 24-packs of Gina 10 microgram vaginal tablets for £29.99. The treatment will still be free to Scottish patients with an NHS prescription or at price for those who pay for prescriptions.
Anne Higgins, Pharmacy Director at Boots, said: "Boots has been supporting women for over 170 years and today is another important milestone in women's health.
"As a pharmacy medicine, Gina is more accessible to patients as they no longer need a prescription from their GP. Boots pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals and from today our pharmacy teams can offer this treatment to patients following a short consultation with no appointment needed."
