Kitchen giant Howden drives revenues up almost 22 per cent in early 2022

Revenues are up almost 22 per cent for East Yorkshire kitchen giant Howden Joinery Group.

Year on year figures show increases in prices and volumes, with the expanding company’s like-for-like sales through depots up more than 20 per cent.

It comes after 2021 saw it become a £2.1 billion turnover company, as investments poured into homes after lockdown.

The FTSE-listed firm has recently revealed major expansion plans for its home town and neighbouring Goole as it increases manufacturing and logistics to serve the growing number of depots in the UK and abroad.

It also produces in Runcorn, Cheshire.

Commenting on the 16-week period it has defined to mid-April, chief executive Andrew Livingston said: "The group has traded well in the first four periods (four week units) of 2022 and we continue to invest in our in-stock, trade-only, local business model. We are mindful that it is still early in the financial year and our second half includes our all-important peak trading period. In addition, given an uncertain macro-economic environment, including rising inflation and energy costs we are staying vigilant for any potential headwinds in our markets.

“However, we remain confident in our business model and with the strong start to the year, the group remains on track with its outlook for 2022."

A total of 50 new depots are planned to be opened in 2022, split evenly between the UK and France, with a further five in Ireland, while 70 existing depots are refurbished.

The first trading period has seen two new UK depots and one new French depot added, with 17 overhauls.

Good progress with the ongoing investment in expanding manufacturing and supply chain capabilities was underlined, with new product introductions also hailed, with 20 new kitchens to be added.

Since announcing a £250 million share buy back programme in February, a total of £60 million has completed.
