American journalist Grant Wahl says he was stopped from entering the stadium and was "detained for half an hour" for wearing a T-shirt with a rainbow on it ahead of USA's game with Wales.
Qatar's stance on homosexuality continues to be in the spotlight, with Monday seeing England, Wales and five other nations having to ditch the 'One Love' captains' armbands owing to fears over FIFA implementing sanctions if they are worn during matches.
BBC presenter Alex Scott did wear the armband during the live broadcast for the game between England and Iran, which you can read about here .
Live updates: USA v Wales as it happens
It is just one of the many issues which have been raised about Qatar in the lead-up to the tournament and throughout the opening few days. Mr Wahl's experience will do little to suppress the conversation, either.
After arriving at the Al Rayyan Stadium, which will play host to Wales' first World Cup game in 64 years when they take on the USA, he wrote on Twitter: "Just now: Security guard refusing to let me into the stadium for USA-Wales. 'You have to change your shirt. It’s not allowed.'"
Mr Wahl, who has more than 800,000 followers on Twitter, later quote tweeted the initial post and wrote: "I’m OK, but that was an unnecessary ordeal. Am in the media center, still wearing my shirt. Was detained for nearly half an hour. Go gays."
Mr Wahl earlier this week wrote on Twitter that he had acquired documents reportedly detailing how security officers were going to deal with public displays of support for the LGBTQ+ community, which you can see in the tweet below.
Meanwhile, The Rainbow Wall Twitter account, the official account for the Welsh LGBTQ+ Supporters' group, revealed female supporters attending tonight's game were having their rainbow bucket hats taken off them. They wrote: "Our rainbow bucket hat. We are so proud of them, BUT news on the ground tonight is our welsh female supporters wearing them in #Qatar are having them taken off them, Not the men, just Women. @FIFAcom ARE YOU SERIOUS !!"
In Qatar, participating in same-sex sexual activity can be punished with up to seven years in prison, or even the death penalty.
