An expert has revealed how many people are leaving themselves vulnerable to illnesses because they forget to clean their hair brushes. Giving our locks a brush is often an important part of daily routines, helping keep it tidy and healthy.
And while most people are aware of the need to wash their hair regularly to keep it in good condition, few remember to clean their brushes, which are often full of dead skin and bacteria.
Sam Cinkir, CEO of hair and skin specialists Este Medical Group, said: “Brushing your hair in the morning, or after a wash, is an integral part of many people’s grooming routines.
“But how many of us actually remember that we need to wash the brush too? Failing to clean our hair brushes leaves them full of dead skin and bacteria, which is often then brushed back onto our hair.
“Not only does this leave our locks looking dull and dirty, but it can leave us open to fungal infection due to the nasty bugs. We should all be washing our hair brushes once a week with a mixture of warm water and baking soda to keep them clean, and prevent them from doing more harm than good to our hair.”
Brushing hair carries a range of benefits apart from making it look aesthetically neat and tidy. It helps distribute the hair’s natural oils to help condition it naturally and give it a subtle shine.
As such, it helps prevent problems such as frizzy hair, greasy roots and split ends. But their design, which involves either rigid or soft spokes, leaves it vulnerable to collecting dirt on the handle brush, which can then be transferred back to the hair when brushing.
Experts recommend washing the brush once a week to prevent cross-contamination and the problems it can cause.
