Today (Friday 17 June) will be the hottest day so far this year, with temperatures peaking at a scorching 34C in some southern areas of the UK. Greater Manchester will be swapping its typical rain for sun, with highs of 27C forecast for this afternoon as conditions remain dry but cloudy at times.

It follows two days of settled, fine weather throughout the country, with temperatures firmly in the high 20s and early 30s. According to the Met Office, the conditions allowed 'temperatures to build day-on-day with the hottest temperatures expected to be reached by Friday for many.'

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Jason Kelly, said; “The heat is a result of a mix of home-grown warming due to a high pressure over the southern half of the UK, as well as a south westerly airflow bringing warm air, which has been over the continent through the week, across the country.

“This is the first spell of hot weather this year and it is unusual for temperatures to exceed these values in June. Some areas may see warm nights with minimum temperatures expected to be in the high teens or even low 20Cs overnight, especially in urban areas such as London.”

In Greater Manchester, this morning will begin with sunny intervals at a warm 20C. It will be hottest at around 1pm, reaching 27C before gradually beginning to cool down. The skies will become overcast from 6pm, with the temperature dipping into the late teens from 8pm onwards.

The sun won't set until 9.40pm, so whether you're working today, or if you're getting out and about, you can make the most of the beautiful weather. But the UV rating will remain at high levels, so ensure you've got your sun cream at the ready to protect yourself from the sun's rays.

Meanwhile, the pollen count is classed as 'very high,' with the risk of grass and nettle pollen rising substantially in the warm weather, says the Met Office.
