AHMEDABAD: Around 2,000 teachers of government primary schools remained absent from duty half the time, according to data collected by the Vidya Samiksha Centre, earlier known as the state education department’s command and control centre.
The state government is likely to take strict action against absentee teachers.
Sources in the directorate of primary education said that the centre has been collecting data pertaining to the teachers for the last few months. It has been found that as many as 2,000 teachers worked only for one-and-a-half months in the last three months.
The data also showed that around 200 teachers performed their duties only for three or four days in the past three months. The centre also found that some teachers remained absent for all three months.
Following this revelation, the directorate of primary education has asked all the district primary education officers (DPO) to provide primary school teachers’ attendance data. Sources said that DPOs are in the process of compiling the data and once it is made available to the education department, strict action will be taken against these teachers. The compiled data is likely to be submitted to the authority within the next fortnight.
Sources also said that the DPOs have also been asked to provide details of teachers who have been assigned other duties so that blameless teachers are not punished. One of the reasons behind the absence of teachers was the online-class model necessitated by the lockdown. And now, though the educational activities have returned to normal, the teachers are reluctant to attend schools.
