Edinburgh pub boss upset as customer spots staff 'joking among themselves'

A pub in Edinburgh’s city centre pub has said they were "upset" to hear of a customer's recent "terrible experience" at the venue.

A visitor of The Last Drop, which sits in the Grassmarket, said they headed to the "iconic" pub for a drink one evening to find the staff "dismissive and not interested". They added: “They were in fact joking amongst themselves about what a slack day they had.”

Management at The Last Drop were quick to respond, adding that they found the punter's experience "unacceptable" and planned to address the issues.

The full review, posted just a few weeks ago, said: “Iconic pub obviously living off its historic origins.

“We called in for a drink at 7pm and the place was empty. The staff were dismissive and not interested in serving anyone, they were in fact joking amongst themselves about what a slack day they were having.

“Any wonder there was nobody there, tables were un-wiped, food on the floor and the toilets were disgustingly dirty. Would not recommend it at all, there are so many better places in Grassmarket.”

Last Drop management replied: “It's upsetting to hear that you did not receive the top-notch service we strive to provide here at The Last Drop, I will be investigating what went wrong when you were in as I do not find this acceptable at all and definitely not what I expect to hear about the pub.

“I will be addressing all points raised with the team on shift over the last few days to ensure that this does not happen again. I know this does not change your experience, and all I can do is apologise that this happened and make sure that it never happens again.

“I am truly sorry about your visit with us and hope you give us another chance to show you how The Last Drop usually is.”

Visitors to the Grassmarket pub seem to generally enjoy the spot, with a four-star rating on TripAdvisor. They’ve raked in 495 ‘excellent’ reviews, and only 62 "poor" ones.

A recent review states: “Great food and atmosphere. The live music was a treat.”

Another added: “I really enjoyed my meal, and my time, here at The Last Drop. The interior is well decorated, and the outside was interesting enough to draw me in.

“The bartenders here (I sat at the bar) were professional, prompt and friendly. Much appreciated.”
