Rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes was the rookie who received most of the hype this offseason after the Washington Commanders selected him in the first round in April’s NFL draft. But there is another rookie Washington defensive back who could make a significant impact in 2023.
Second-round pick Jartavius “Quan” Martin was Washington’s second-round pick and could play multiple roles for the Commanders in 2023. Martin played everywhere in the secondary during his time at Illinois. He was outstanding wherever he lined up.
Martin figures to get some time in the slot and play safety for Washington this season.
Chad Reuter of NFL.com recently revealed his projected All-Rookie Team for 2023, and he included the Washington defensive back — Martin, not Forbes.
Martin slides into the Commanders’ nickel spot, challenging slot receivers with his quick feet and tenacity. He can be an effective blitzer, as well, and will handle his run responsibilities from the get-go.
Martin’s versatility made him a commodity in the draft. Not only can Martin play everywhere, but he’s also impactful. With Kamren Curl, Darrick Forrest, Percy Butler, Jeremy Reaves, Benjamin St-Juste, Kendall Fuller, Forbes and Martin, the Commanders could have a special secondary in 2023.
