Brimstone Spa is quite a spectacle to arrive at, with its large chalet-esque building standing tall over the estate’s large pond. I stayed in a mezzanine loft suite, which features two luxurious floors and a dreamy balcony.
As I walked into the suite, accompanied by a friendly member of staff, I couldn’t quite believe how cosy the room looked. Downstairs was a long sofa in front of a flat screen TV, a fully stocked mini fridge and a kettle, a desk, a squishy chair, a bathroom and a bath.
Upstairs was a king size bed, another TV and a large bathroom with a shower. The bed had Egyptian cotton sheets and a goose down duvet.
After running around the room like excited children, we headed straight to the thermal spa. It’s a short walk, happily done by most in the provided bathrobes and slippers.
Inside the spa are various sauna and steam rooms as well as less known experiences like the laconium room which boosts circulation, and an ice fountain. When you walk in, you are handed a slip of paper with a preferred order, though you can take that with a pinch of salt.
We followed the order the first time, then headed outside to the heated outdoor pool, which is something off a postcard. The next few times we chose our favourite treatments and spent the majority of time in the outdoor pool.
There’s a good choice of food and drink around the spa too, with a restaurant on the estate called Stove, a reading room within the hotel which is constantly stocked with snacks and sandwiches around lunchtime, and a nearby pub called Wainwrights’ Inn. Three may not sound like a lot, but that gives you a slightly posh restaurant, a cosy pub for a roast and a snack room, which is the perfect range.
We ate at Stove on our first night, which is connected to the hotel. The food ranges from burgers and pizza to fish and veggie options.
We spent the next day exploring the nearby villages and towns. The weather was horrific, but thankfully the hotel has a coat room where you can help yourself to coats, walking boots and anything else you need for a Lake District trek.
Brimstone Spa is a perfect sanctuary in the British countryside. It’s the kind of hotel that’s so perfect and cosy you don’t want to and don’t have to leave, but surrounded by the beautiful Lake District if you’ve gone for the area.
