Black Mirror's cryptic Twitter post has fans convinced Netflix show is returning after four years

A cryptic Twitter post from the account of hit sci-fi show Black Mirror sent fans into a frenzy - and they are now convinced the show is returning for a long-awaited new series. The anthology series last aired new episodes in June 2019.

It was announced that production had started on the show’s upcoming sixth season back in July 2022 but no further updates have been given. But new episodes appear to be imminent after the show's official Twitter profile broke its four-year silence with the words: "What have we missed?".

The official Netflix account replied: “Scientists are still creating robots that slowly harness more and more advanced AI like they haven't watched a single episode of your show.” Netflix Latin America simply said: “ChatGPT.”

Created by writer Charlie Brooker and his producing partner Annabel Jones, Black Mirror started life on Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to the streaming service, the MEN reports. Its standalone stories with a contemporary take on techno-paranoia have proved eerily prescient and have been compared to The Twilight Zone.

Fans were quick to point out that since Black Mirror last aired the world has faced a pandemic, seen the rise of artificial intelligence in the form of ChatGPT and seen a businessman-turned-TV presenter become president and subsequently be indicted.

In response to the tweet, JoshuaDCooke said: "Finally! Where have you been! Please end this episode I want to wake up now!" TrueNathanD wrote: "I miss the days when you were just science fiction". And OnlyInDevon said: "Put it this way, I've had moments when I've been pretty convinced we've all been living through a live action episode these past 4 years..."

marqEmarq replied: "The next Black Mirror season 6 trailer should just be news/video clips of the past 3 years and end with “Thanks for Watching. Season 7 coming soon”. And ImMBaldwin said: "The world went through most of your episodes. You wrote it knowing the future all along....I hope you have more in store for us though."

Adding to the speculation, Charlie Brooker himself replied to the Black Mirror tweet with a quizzical face emoji.

Last May, Variety reported that the show would be making a comeback and its new series would consist of more episodes than in previous years. Casting rumours have suggested some huge names are set to appear, including Salma Hayek Pinault, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Atlanta star Zazie Beetz, and Josh Hartnett.
