Public health officials in Washington and Montana are investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts, and the most consequential detail for shoppers is what has not happened. No recall has been issued. The implicated product was sold at grocery stores and food co-ops and served in restaurants, and the only formal instruction consumers have received is a state advisory telling them to throw the sprouts away.
Sixteen people across three states have been infected with the same strain of Salmonella Bovismorbificans. Thirteen are in Washington, where two have been hospitalized. Two more cases are in Montana, and one is in Idaho. No deaths have been reported.
