The Body Takes Over Before the Mind Can Signal
Francesco Pia, a water safety researcher, documented in 1974 what he called Instinctive Drowning Response, a physiological survival mechanism that kicks in the moment a person begins to lose buoyancy. The findings, later published in On Scene: The Journal of U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue, upended what lifeguards had been trained to look for. The body, Pia found, prioritises keeping the airway above water above everything else. Arms cannot wave. The mouth cannot form words. The body is already using every resource it has just to stay at the surface.
