I honestly love a good survival thriller. Not only are they intense and uniquely gripping, but they also lean into strong character drama to raise the stakes. It’s the one genre that strips away the comforts of modern life and forces you to question what you’d do if everything went wrong. Whether it’s dodging apex predators in a flooded basement or clinging to a capsized boat miles from the shoreline, these films tap into our deepest instincts.
Paramount+ has become a goldmine for anyone looking to test their pulse. From the harrowing true-life grit of the newly released “Not Without Hope” to the claustrophobic, high-speed tension of '90s classics, the streaming service is currently going all-in on some truly heart-pounding suspense.
So, without further ado, here are five of the best survival thriller movies to stream on Paramount+ right now.
‘Crawl’ (2019)
I’m starting this list off strong with one of the best survival thrillers, and that’s “Crawl.” This gripping movie is a tight 87 minutes, wasting almost no time on fluff, moving from the initial storm warning to the alligator-infested basement in record time. It’s essentially a disaster flick and a monster movie mashed together, and it executes both better than most big-budget blockbusters.
When a massive Category 5 hurricane hits Florida, competitive swimmer Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to find her estranged father, Dave (Barry Pepper). She discovers him trapped and badly injured in the crawlspace of their old family home. Their escape is blocked by a pack of aggressive, territorial alligators that have entered the basement through the storm drains. As the house begins to flood, Haley and her father must escape the claustrophobic, dark space to outsmart the predators.

‘Not Without Hope’ (2026)
Based on the 2009 true story, “Not Without Hope” is a visceral survival movie that leans heavily into the claustrophobia of the open ocean. It focuses heavily on the mechanics of survival, such as how hypothermia actually sets in, the difficulty of staying on a slick, overturned hull in 12-foot waves, and the massive logistical effort the Coast Guard undertakes to find a "needle in a haystack." This thriller is a gripping watch and one of 2026’s forgotten flicks.
“Not Without Hope” follows four friends — including NFL players Marquis Cooper (Quentin Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrence Terrell) — on a deep-sea fishing trip 70 miles off the Florida coast. When their boat’s anchor becomes snagged, a mistake causes the vessel to capsize during a massive storm, tossing the men into the freezing Gulf of Mexico. Clinging to the overturned hull, the group battles 12-foot waves, severe hypothermia, and dehydration.

‘Walking Out’ (2017)
A survival thriller you may not have heard of is “Walking Out,” released nearly a decade ago but largely forgotten since. This is essentially another creature feature, this time involving a bear in the snowy wilderness. Most survival movies are about an adult protecting a child. However, this flips the script by having a teenage boy (who is out of his element) have to physically carry his father to safety, creating a unique kind of physical and emotional tension.
Fourteen-year-old David (Josh Wiggins) travels to rural Montana to visit his estranged father, Cal, for an annual moose hunting trip. Cal (Matt Bomer) is a rugged survivalist determined to teach his son the ways of the wilderness. However, the excursion takes a catastrophic turn when a chance encounter with a grizzly bear leaves both severely injured. With Cal unable to walk and the harsh winter weather closing in, David must carry his father on his back across miles of treacherous, snow-covered terrain.

‘A Quiet Place’ (2018)
If you’re in the mood for a horror-tinged survival thriller, “A Quiet Place” deserves a spot on your watchlist. With almost no spoken dialogue, the story is driven by visual cues and performance alone. The cast, led by Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (who also directs), conveys constant fear through their facial expressions. It’s safe to say they do an incredible job, resulting in a deeply tense film. One that only grows more intense with its sequel, and an exciting third installment is on the way.
In a post-apocalyptic world, the Abbott family lives in absolute silence to avoid being hunted by blind, extraterrestrial predators that track prey using hypersensitive hearing. Communication is conducted through American Sign Language, and paths are covered in sand to muffle footsteps. As Evelyn Abbott (Blunt) nears the end of her pregnancy, the family prepares for the challenge of a newborn in a sound-sensitive environment.

‘Breakdown’ (1997)
“Breakdown” is one of the most perfectly constructed thrillers of the 1990s. Unlike his action hero roles in “Escape from New York,” Kurt Russell plays a regular, desperate husband who has to find courage he didn't know he had. Once the mystery starts, the tension never lets up, and it captures the gaslighting feeling of being in a strange town where everyone is lying to you. The film very much relies on suspense because of that, and it’s guaranteed to keep you on edge.
Jeff (Russell) and Amy Taylor (Kathleen Quinlan) are driving across the Southwest desert when their Jeep suffers a mechanical failure. A passing trucker offers to take Amy to a nearby diner to call for help, while Jeff stays with the vehicle. When Jeff manages to fix the car and arrives at the diner, he finds no sign of his wife. The locals claim they never saw her, and the trucker denies ever meeting the couple. Realizing Amy has been kidnapped for ransom, Jeff is forced into a desperate hunt across the desolate landscape to find her.
